Out-of-state visitor causes fatal accident in South Philadelphia

Earlier this month, a 25-year-old Philadelphia resident was killed when his car was hit by a suspected drunk driver. Though it is unclear whether the family members of this 25-year-old will file a wrongful death lawsuit following their loved one's death, these are the kinds of accidents that generally lead to wrongful death or personal injury claims.

Putting a child up for adoption without the father's consent

When a child is born in Philadelphia, the mother's name is listed on the birth certificate. If the father is present or the mother wishes to name the father, his name will also be included. Some women choose not to name the fathers, precluding them from receiving child support and from the fathers having access to or custody of their children. If no father is listed, authorities need not get the father's consent to give up his parental rights to the child if the mother wishes to put the child up for adoption. What that really means is that mothers need not ask or inform the father of their children that they are putting the children up for adoption.

Divorce rate among older couples is sky high

Though most of us in Doylestown think of divorce as something younger people do, there are adults of all ages getting divorces. What is particularly surprising is that the divorce rate for people in their 20s is falling, at least according to a new study. Yet even more surprising is that the divorce rate among people aged 60 to 65 has tripled and for people over 65 it has increased fivefold since 1990.

Using prenuptial agreements to protect stay-at-home parents

Though many people in Philadelphia recognize that creating a custody arrangement between divorcing parents may be an extremely difficult part of separating, so is property division. It is how a marital estate is divided that could have a strong impact on either spouse's financial future.

Why turning left could be dangerous for others

Who would have thought that turning left is so much more dangerous than turning right? There are many people in Dublin who recognize that left-hand turns may slow down traffic or may mean waiting around for oncoming traffic to clear, but they may not realize that these turns are also responsible for three times as many pedestrian deaths as right-hand turns. While this data comes from New York, there is also federal data that shows that 10 times as many pedestrian accidents (both fatal and nonfatal) are caused by left turns rather than by right turns.

Arranged marriages don't always work out in the US

Even though many communities across the world, including many European cultures, have had arranged marriages in the past, they are most often associated with South Asia. Since a number of people from South Asia are moving to and raising children in the Philadelphia area, there has been a small number of Pennsylvanians participating in arranged marriages of their own. With a 30 percent increase in Indian Americans from 2000 to 2010 in Philadelphia (not to mention Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali Americans), arranged marriages are an option for many first-generation adults.
