Divorce rate among older couples is sky high

Though most of us in Doylestown think of divorce as something younger people do, there are adults of all ages getting divorces. What is particularly surprising is that the divorce rate for people in their 20s is falling, at least according to a new study. Yet even more surprising is that the divorce rate among people aged 60 to 65 has tripled and for people over 65 it has increased fivefold since 1990.

One thought is that many of these individuals in their 60s and 70s who are divorcing have already been through the divorce process at least once before. Since second and subsequent marriages are statisically less stable than first marriages, it is no surprise that many older couples are headed to their family law attorneys for divorce paperwork.

Though divorcing couples in their 60s may not have to worry about child custody or child support, their divorces are far from simple. It is not just a matter of dividing the communal property, as one wrong move could leave an individual without enough money to retire or force a retired individual back to work. Working with a skilled divorce attorney, is one of the best ways to reduce the financial risks associated with divorce.

It is also likely that the growing divorce rate among older couples has something to do with shifting cultural mores. No longer are men and women who ask for a divorce considered to be failures, selfish or destroying the social fabric. Instead, many people recognize that sometimes both individuals are just better off if they separate.
