Why turning left could be dangerous for others

Who would have thought that turning left is so much more dangerous than turning right? There are many people in Dublin who recognize that left-hand turns may slow down traffic or may mean waiting around for oncoming traffic to clear, but they may not realize that these turns are also responsible for three times as many pedestrian deaths as right-hand turns. While this data comes from New York, there is also federal data that shows that 10 times as many pedestrian accidents (both fatal and nonfatal) are caused by left turns rather than by right turns.

Moreover, 36 percent of fatal motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers turning left in front of oncoming motorcycles. This is certainly not an insignificant slice of fatal motorcycle accidents.

Beyond fatal accidents, left turns can cause significant injuries. Whenever someone is injured by a negligent left-turning driver, be it a pedestrian, a bicyclist, a motorcyclist or another motorist, he or she can file a personal injury lawsuit.

Though it may be relatively clear that the left-turning driver is at fault, an injured victim will often work with a motor vehicle accident lawyer to argue that they should receive compensation. An insurance company or the left-turning driver may both try to turn it around and claim that the pedestrian walked into the path of the car or that the motorcyclist pulled around another vehicle.

By putting together evidence and a strong argument, a motor vehicle accident lawyer can help to get an injured victim the compensation that he or she needs.
