Rate of divorce among baby boomers is on the rise

At one point in America's history, there was an unbearable social stigma in ending a marriage. While in some pockets of the country and in some communities, there are still those who will look down their noses at people who divorce, the fact of the matter is that divorce is increasingly more prevalent. As times have changed, it is not just younger people choosing to divorce, but older generations, as well.

Mother fights for fair custody arrangement with her ex

When parents divorce or separate, they have to come up with a child custody arrangement. Unless one parent is unsafe or it is otherwise in the best interests of the children not to spend time with the parent, most parents in Pennsylvania share custody. If, for some reason, one parent is given sole custody of the child, the other parent typically has some kind of rights to visitation, either supervised or unsupervised.

University of Pennsylvania student killed in pedestrian accident

Pedestrian accidents are often tragic, in part because individuals have no real protection against fast-moving vehicles. If a car slams into a person, even at 20 mph, it can cause serious injuries. The faster the car is traveling, the greater the risk of life-changing injuries or death. Sadly, in this week's story, a new graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School was hit while walking. Despite his best efforts to avoid being hit, he was thrown off an elevated walkway and fell 38 feet.

Will mediation be better for you than divorce?

Even though we see and hear of marriages ending with fights, court battles and divorces that ruin any chance of former spouses ever getting along again, there are other ways to end a marriage. While mediation and collaborative law are not right for every couple, when they are appropriate, they can often lead to better divorce settlements, a more cordial post-divorce relationship with an ex. Talking with a divorce attorney may be one of the best ways to determine if mediation would work well.

Serious motorcycle crash caused by man with numerous DUI convictions

In a recent story by NBC 10, a 50-year-old man was convicted of driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle and a host of other charges. He was sentenced to eight to 17 years for his involvement in a serious motorcycle accident that left a 24-year-old dead. The Chester County crash happened over a year ago in April 2013 when the 50-year-old turned his pickup truck into oncoming traffic and the young motorcyclist.

Spousal support for same-sex couples?

There is no getting around the fact that there are a large number of same-sex relationships in Philadelphia. And with New Jersey right across the river, many of the people in these couples are legally married. While a handful of states and the federal government recognizes these marriages, Pennsylvania does not. What that also means is that it is unlikely that any Pennsylvania couple who wished to divorce would be unable to do so. While it may not seem like that big of a deal to not be able to divorce, especially when the state doesn't even recognize the marriage, it is for those who are stuck in limbo.

Gay and lesbian parents often get less parenting time

Times are changing in Philadelphia; no longer are gays and lesbians staying in marriages because they are ashamed of coming out. That does not mean, however, that there still aren't gay men and lesbians who don't marry wives and husbands, respectively, only to realize later that they are gay. Oftentimes, these men and women have children with their former spouses, which means that they need to come up with parenting plans that allocates how much custodial time each parent has with a child.
