Traffic accident injures 3 in Pennsylvania

An Allentown accident left three people injured, authorities stated. The July 2 crash reportedly occurred at the intersection of Irving Street and Hanover Avenue.

According to police, two pedestrians were talking on a corner at the intersection when an approaching 34-year-old driver diverted his attention from the road to the pedestrians. Consequently, the driver did not notice the traffic light on westbound Hanover Avenue turn red and continued driving through it, ultimately crashing into another vehicle at the intersection, police stated.

Reportedly, three occupants of the second vehicle suffered injuries in the crash and were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment. Police charged the 34-year-old driver with failure to stop at a red light, driving without insurance and three counts of accident causing injury. According to authorities, the 34-year-old driver was driving without a valid driver's license at the time of the accident.

If a preponderance of evidence from this case were to indicate that distracted driving did in fact play a contributory role in the car accident, then the at-fault driver may be held accountable for the incident not just criminally but also in civil court. That is because people who suffer damages as a result of auto accidents caused by negligent drivers may pursue civil action against those drivers.

For example, accident victims may retain a personal injury lawyer and file suit, seeking financial compensation for the damages related to their injuries. These damages may include but are not limited to hospital bills, medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and even lost wages. In order to prevail in such a lawsuit, accident victims and their attorney must prove to a civil court that the distracted driver should be held responsible for the accident and its consequent damages.
