Passenger in SUV dies after wrong-way crash

A late-afternoon fatal crash on Pennsylvania's Route 222 on Aug. 14 initiated an on-site investigation by Fleetwood police and the district attorney's office in Berks County that lasted for about six hours. The auto accident was allegedly caused by a wrong-way driver. Police in Fleetwood are asking the community for information concerning the crash.

A sport utility vehicle, driven by a Brooklyn teenager, veered into the southbound lane of Route 222 traveling north. The driver of the SUV smashed head-on into a box truck belonging to a Lancaster business. The impact caused the truck's fuel line to ignite, and the vehicle burst into flames. After the crash, the SUV continued moving and hit a utility pole.

The SUV had two occupants in addition to the 19-year-old driver. One, a passenger in the front seat, was identified as a male, 53, and the other, a 57-year-old Wayne County woman, was riding in the backseat. According to a police representative, the woman was not responsive when they arrived and died. The 40-year-old box truck driver vacated his vehicle before it caught fire after the fuel line burst and was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital. Traffic was diverted from the busy highway until 11 p.m.

The reason a driver heads in the wrong direction on the roadway is not always clear, as in this case. Many times, it is due to distracted or drunk driving. In such cases, the driver might be considered to be negligent and held liable for their actions.

In an accident such as this, an attorney may help the family of someone killed in an accident by reviewing all reports and witness accounts of the crash. The attorney may assist the family to recover expenses due to funeral and medical bills among others by filing a wrongful death suit.
