1 killed, 2 injured in Pennsylvania hit-and-run

One man was killed, and two people were injured in a hit-and-run accident in Kiski Township on Feb. 13. Police eventually found and arrested the driver who had run from the scene of the accident.

According to police, the fatal collision occurred at about 2 p.m. at the intersection of Route 56 and McKinstry Hill Road when a Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by a 34-year-old man, attempted to make a turn into the parking lot of a modular house. Reports say that the vehicle crossed into the path of a small car that was driven by a 61-year-old Apollo man. The driver of the Hyundai then left his vehicle and ran away from the scene down a wooded hill. He left footprints in the snow as he ran, according to reports.

The driver of the smaller car was taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville with catastrophic injuries, where he died. His passenger suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Pittsburgh area hospital for treatment. A woman in the Santa Fe was also injured.

Police searched the area for hours and finally located the driver of the Santa Fe in Apollo where he was arrested. The charges against him for this incident were not detailed in the available report; however, sources say that he had several outstanding warrants. It is known that police did acquire a warrant allowing them to test his blood alcohol content level.

Families of victims involved in cases such as this one might choose to file a wrongful death claim that cites negligence as evidence of liability. For example, a driver's decision to leave the scene of the accident and fail to render aid might be used as evidence that the driver was negligent and caused the death of the victim. A successful claim might result in monetary awards for damages that include the medical, funeral and burial costs incurred by the family.
