Child custody and co-parenting in Pennsylvania

After child custody and visitation matters are over, parents are often left to work together in order to raise their children. When Pennsylvania parents keep their children's best interests in mind and work towards co-parenting, their children may be better adjusted and happier.

It can be difficult to work with the other parent in order to co-parent a child. Even if it is hard to do so, parents should not give up and should keep trying to make it work. There are several ways a parent can try to effectively co-parent with the other parent even if the two do not get along in other areas.

An important step to take is to reframe a view of the other parent as a partner rather than as an enemy. Parents should be partners when it comes to raising their child. This involves listening to the input the other parent has to give regarding various decisions and issues. It also may involve the parents setting boundaries for conversations, so they remain focused on their child's needs rather than on perceived hurts from the past.

While co-parenting may be difficult, it can also be rewarding for the parents and their child. Many studies have demonstrated that children are happier when their parents are able to get along with one another. A child custody case is not over with the issuance of a child custody and visitation order. After an order has issued, parents must then move forward and work together for their child's best interests. If they can put aside their differences and focus on their child's needs, they may be able to enjoy their child's upbringing with less conflict and strife. People can begin this process while they are still in the midst of their child custody and visitation cases to set the stage for the future.
