Pennsylvania teens dead in speeding accident

Two teens were killed and a third injured in a one-car crash in Fayette County on May 3. The fatal accident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling at over 100 miles per hour.

According to police, the incident happened at about 10:45 p.m. when a 17-year-old boy from Smithfield who was driving at high speeds south on Route 119, slid across the center line and lost control of the vehicle. The teen then drove off the side of the road, to a grass embankment and then the vehicle became airborne. The vehicle hit a second embankment, overturned and crashed into a utility pole, became airborne again, and crashed head-on into a wall.

The driver along with a 17-year-old girl from Uniontown who was a front seat passenger were killed in the crash. A 16-year-old Uniontown girl who was seated in the back was injured and transported by air to received medical attention. While all teens were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, car accidents at such high speeds often become fatal.

Injured victims and the families of deceased victims of similar types of crashes could be successful in a civil lawsuit even if a surviving driver is not convicted of any criminal charges. This is because the burden of proof in such a lawsuit is lower than it is in a criminal case. The family members of a decedent may want to have legal assistance in filing a wrongful death lawsuit that would seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses and other applicable losses. When the at-fault driver is killed in a crash, the lawsuit could name the driver's estate or personal representative as the defendant.
