Feds announce plan to reduce car fatality rate to zero by 2046

Many people lose their lives in traffic accidents in Pennsylvania each year. The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a program that aims to reduce the number of deadly crashes to zero within the next 30 years.

This has been prompted in part by some sobering statistics that show that the number of fatal accidents around the country has begun to rise after years of decline. There was an increase of more than 7 percent in 2015 compared to 2014, and data from the first six months of 2016 reflect an even greater increase over the corresponding period in the preceding year. The initiative from the Obama administration plans to use a combination of existing technologies and emergent technologies to effectively end all car accident injuries.

At first, the plan will be rolled out with tried and true solutions, ranging from the addition of more highway rumble strips to programs that encourage seat belt use. The real crux of the program comes from the emergence of self-driving technology and its hoped-for widespread use in coming years. Statistics show that more that 90 percent of traffic accidents are caused by human error, and it is believed that taking drivers out of the equation will result in a dramatic decrease.

Until that day comes, however, car crashes will continue to be caused by drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs, speeding, distracted or otherwise negligent. A person who has been injured in such an accident may want to have the assistance of a lawyer when seeking compensation from the at-fault motorist for the losses that have been sustained.
