When is reasonable visitation a good option?

Philadelphia parents who are going through a divorce and who are determining custody have different visitation options to consider, and each particular situation will determine which option is best for the family. For some couples, a judge might establish that the non-custodial parent is entitled to reasonable visitation. In this case, the relationship between the ex-spouses is very central to making the visitation schedule work.

Reasonable visitation means that the parents are responsible for coming up with their own visitation schedule. However, this is dependent on how well they can get along after a separation or divorce. For parents who are able to communicate openly and often, this option can be very successful, as they can negotiate when the non-custodial parent can spend time with the children, depending on the various family needs. It is important to remember that in these types of cases, the custodial parent will usually have more influence and power over how this arrangement will work.

However, if the parents do not get along, or if there are changed circumstances that prevent this type of flexible visitation schedule from working, the parents might go back to court and request another type of visitation schedule. Additionally, if the custodial parent makes it difficult for the non-custodial parent to see the children, the judge might also have to get involved in setting a visitation schedule.

While child custody is often a contentious issue, there are many situations where the parents can work out a schedule on their own without the need to get the court involved. They might be happier with the result as well, and they may want to have their respective attorneys review the agreement before it is signed.
