Dealing with distracted drivers in Pennsylvania

Distracted driving has always been an issue as people taking their attention off of the road for whatever reason can be dangerous, but the use of smart phones appears to have made it more common. It seems that distracted driving has caused the previous decline in traffic fatalities to reverse itself.

Between 2008 and 2014, there was a general reduction in fatal traffic accidents. However, there was an increase between 2014 and 2015, and preliminary accident data from 2016 indicates that the trend is continuing. It appears that more people were killed on highways in 2016 than at any time since 2008.

The issue of distracted driving has become alarming enough that defensive driving courses have begun to add training on how to deal with distracted drivers. Additionally, psychologists have even started to look into the issue. A paper on the cognitive processes needed to deal with distracted driving was published recently, and it is titled SPIDER: A Framework for Understanding Driver Distraction. The paper goes over the ways to identify and avoid crashes with distracted drivers, including things like predicting the actions that motorists will take and determining the best responses to them.

Today's automobiles are designed with crumple zones, meaning that a vehicle's exterior will break easily in an effort to protect passengers. Therefore, even if someone does not experience a car accident injury, they can expect to face expensive vehicle repairs. If a person is injured in a crash, medical bills and lost wages can make a crash that much more costly. A lawyer could assist them in determining the total crash related expenses and pursuing compensation for them from an individual or an insurance provider.
