Hummelstown man faces DWI charge following crash

Police charged a 43-year-old man from Hummelstown with driving while under the influence after he was involved in a head-on crash that led to two people being hospitalized. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the vehicle the man was operating crossed the roadway and went through the guardrail. He struck another vehicle being operated by a 74-year-old man from Harrisburg. The incident took place around 5:45 p.m. on April 10.

Studying teens dangerous driving habits

Pennsylvania residents might be interested in a new study that surveyed teenagers about their behavior and habits while operating a motor vehicle. Researchers discovered that although teens acknowledged texting behind the wheel to be unsafe, they still engaged in many other activities that could be just as dangerous. According to the survey, 27 percent of the respondents admitted to changing their shoes or clothes while driving their vehicle.

Pennsylvania truck accident leads to 3 injuries

On March 6, a 31-year-old man failed to maintain control of the commercial coal truck he was driving eastward along Route 422. The coal truck ended up rolling over and skidding into the wrong side of the road. At some point during the incident, which unfolded around 2 p.m., the out-of-control truck hit a pickup truck carrying a 34-year-old woman and her passenger. This vehicle was subsequently struck from behind by an SUV.

In a study by the CDC, the risks of distracted driving became clear in statistics indicating that 3,328 people died and over 421,000 people were injured as a result of a distracted driver in 2012.

Truck driver faces trial after Pennsylvania accident kills 3

In a preliminary hearing on Jan. 5, a Berks County district judge found sufficient evidence to send a case about a seven-vehicle accident to trial. The crash took place on May 12, 2014, and the man going to trial faces charges for three felony counts of homicide by vehicle. Authorities say that the accident occurred on Interstate 78 East when a 56-year-old man, who is from New Jersey, failed to accommodate slow traffic while driving a tractor-trailer, and his truck hit a car driven by a 52-year-old Allentown man in the left lane. The impact sent the car forward into other vehicles, and the Allentown man died after his car burst into flames. Other fires erupted due to the first one, and one of the vehicle fires killed a 57-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, who were both from York.

The rise of fatalities caused by distracted driving

Pennsylvania residents may not have heard the recent data about distracted driving in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that the issue is a major problem in the United States and has led to a number of fatalities and injuries as a result. In order to address the issue, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued a ban prohibiting commercial vehicle operators from texting while driving. The government has also gotten involved, and many states have enacted laws banning the use of a cellphone while driving.

Pennsylvania crash kills 4 teenagers, injures 2

On Dec. 19, four Pennsylvania teenagers were killed in a car accident when the vehicle they were traveling crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic, causing a collision. The report stated that the teenagers were identified as a 13-year-old female, two 16-year-old males and a 17-year-old male.

The causes of whiplash

Pennsylvania drivers and passengers who have been involved in rear-end collisions are likely to have experienced whiplash, a common injury suffered in these types of crashes. The injury occurs when the neck of an occupant in a stopped car quickly snaps backward and then forward when the stopped car is impacted from the rear by a moving vehicle. Whiplash can also occur when a slower vehicle is struck from behind by a faster one.
