Property division at issue in Michael Moore divorce

If you're preparing for divorce, have you considered the full scope of marital assets to be divided between you and your spouse? For those with significant assets, property division may involve stock options, retirement accounts, mortgages, collectible items, investment accounts, business assets -- the list goes on. In Pennsylvania, marital assets and debts are divided according to what is fair or equitable, though "equitable" may not be "equal."

Documentary moviemaker Michael Moore and Kathleen Glynn, Moore's wife of 23 years, have embarked on a divorce process that already seems to involve some sticky property issues. The spouses reportedly have assets valued at tens of millions of dollars, and as a producer of some of his movies, Glynn appears to have contributed significantly to Moore's career.

However, Moore claims that Glynn wasted marital money by building a $2 million vacation home in Michigan. Moore has also asserted that Glynn harmed his reputation by spending so much on the house. The spouses own eight more properties, including a condominium in New York.

A divorce trial has been scheduled for July, and Moore's agents, Mort Janklow and Ari Emanuel, are expected to testify, perhaps about the ways in which Glynn has allegedly harmed Moore's career.

Interestingly, it was reported that Moore has requested a list of quilts in Glynn's possession. She apparently likes to quilt and has a Facebook page devoted to the practice.

When divorcing spouses begin thinking about their future, they should have someone on their side who can help assess the value of marital property and achieve a fair settlement. This typically requires skilled negotiation, and anyone preparing for such a divorce can speak with an attorney with experience in categorizing and dividing marital assets.
