Until we have self-driving cars, put down your smartphone!

If Google has its way, self-driving cars will be the future of transportation. Whether we get there and get there soon remains to be seen, but until we have cars that don't require drivers to be constantly paying attention, we will have people putting their lives and safety, as well as everyone else on the road, at risk by not focusing on driving. Unfortunately for the people of Doylestown, there are a number of serious car accidents caused by distracted drivers.

One of the biggest distractions to people are their smartphones. What was once a luxury item that very few people had, smartphones are now in most people's pockets and purses. Unfortunately, those phones fail to stay there when their owners get behind the wheel. According to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, 30 percent of drivers with smartphones use them to text or email while driving. Another 8 percent of basic cellphone users will text or email behind the wheel.

Worse, as smartphone technology improves and our phones become even more useful, the more likely it will be that people will use them while driving. Of course, this puts others at risk of serious car accidents, injuries or even death.

Driving while distracted can be used as evidence in a personal injury lawsuit. In order to receive compensation following a crash, an injured victim must show that the other driver was negligent. If he or she can show that the other driver was texting, surfing the Internet, or otherwise busy on his or her phone, the victim stands a good chance of demonstrating the other driver's negligence.
