Exhausted teen may have caused Pennsylvania accident

A 65-year-old Pennsylvania woman is dead after an early morning crash in Lehigh County on April 12. The driver, who allegedly caused the accident, said she may have dozed off, according to police at the scene. The Walnutport teenager is charged with vehicular homicide in the incident. She is also facing charges of reckless endangerment and involuntary manslaughter.

The 19-year-old was heading home from an almost 11-hour shift at the mall in Whitehall Township, and according to preliminary hearing testimony by authorities, she texted that she might not remember the drive home because she was exhausted. She went to college classes for three hours the day before and returned home where she slept for only a few hours before driving to work, a Pennsylvania State Police representative said.

She drove north on Route 145 for approximately 15 minutes before her Hyundai Elantra allegedly crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 65-year-old woman from Lehigh Township at approximately 8:30 a.m. There was no sign she tried to stop, and her speedometer was at 70 after the collision, according to the trooper. Her attorney said he would present a crash reconstruction report soon.

An auto accident may happen because a driver is too tired to stay awake. This may not be intentional, but driving in this condition is not a choice a responsible driver would make. The family of someone killed by a driver who abandons their responsibility to other motorists, as in this case, may suffer financial problems due to funeral cost and lost wages. An attorney may review the accident report to determine negligence and help the family file a wrongful death suit to recover damages.
