Man killed in fiery rear-end crash on Pennsylvania I-81

According to a press release issued by the Pennsylvania State Police, a 49-year-old man was killed when the stationary Chevrolet Tahoe in which he was a passenger burst into flames after being struck from behind on Interstate 81 near exit 20 around 7 p.m. on Sept. 4. The impact was precipitated when a distracted driver hit a stopped car behind the Tahoe. Traffic was at a standstill because of an earlier crash on the roadway.

Three other individuals involved in the crash had moderate injuries while a fourth person was uninjured. The police did not indicate whether they plan to press charges as a result of the fatal car accident. Both lanes of the interstate highway were closed while the scene of the accident was cleared.

While the injuries of some of the occupants of the three vehicles involved in the crash were described as moderate, it is not uncommon in rear-end collisions for passengers to suffer whiplash injuries, the extent of which may not be immediately apparent. The consequences of a whiplash injury may include persistent headache, dizziness, pain and stiffness in the neck, numbness and tingling in the hands and arms. Victims may also experience fatigue, irritability, sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating.

In any rear-end collision, regardless of whether or not charges are filed, the individuals who suffered injuries may elect to pursue a personal injury action against the driver at fault. They may be able to recover medical expenses and lost earnings. Plaintiffs in cases of this nature are often represented by a personal injury lawyer who can help prepare an appropriate claim and represent a plaintiff in court if a settlement cannot be reached beforehand.
