Motorists in Pennsylvania may benefit from learning more about the facts related to impaired driving, as described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Research indicates that motorcyclists and young drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident caused by impaired driving. Impaired driving accounts for more than 30 percent of the fatal accidents that occur in the United States. During 2012, more than 10,000 people were killed by these types of accidents.
Approximately 20 percent of the fatal accidents involving children younger than 14 were caused by an impaired driver. More than 50 percent of the children killed in these accidents were actually riding in the vehicle with an impaired driver. During 2010, there were more than 1.4 million drivers arrested for DUI, while there were more than 110 million impaired driving incidents that were self-reported.
Statistics indicate that 30 people are killed by impaired drivers every day. During 2012, people between age 21 and 24 years old accounted for more than 30 percent of the drivers killed with blood alcohol content levels that exceeded the state limit. Nearly 30 percent of the motorcyclists killed during 2012 registered a blood alcohol content that exceeded 30 percent. Almost 50 percent of the motorcyclist deaths caused by alcohol involved riders over age 40.
People who are injured in a car accident due to someone else's actions or negligence may be entitled to collect restitution for damages. In order to obtain compensation through court, plaintiffs are often required to prove that the injuries or hardships suffered were caused by the defendant. In incidents involving motor vehicles, negligence is typically cited as being the primary factor in assigning culpability.
