Man accused of drunk driving in a Pennsylvania accident

A 42-year-old Hellertown man has been charged with vehicular homicide stemming from a May 28 multi-vehicle crash that left a man dead. According to police, the Hellertown man had a blood alcohol concentration of .22 percent shortly after the crash occurred.

The accident happened on Route 22 around 8:30 p.m. A tractor-trailer stopped abruptly due to backed up traffic. A 34-year-old Allentown man, who was following behind the tractor-trailer, stopped as well. He was then struck from behind by the Hellertown man, who was driving a box truck. The Allentown man then hit the rear of the tractor-trailer and became wedged between the two vehicles. He died on the scene.

Police say the 42-year-old was following too closely with his box truck. He failed to brake as the vehicle in front of him stopped, which caused the accident. He is being charged with vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, driving while under the influence of alcohol and reckless endangerment. He is being charged with several lesser traffic violations as well. He has been sent, without bail, to Lehigh County Jail.

The death of a loved one can be expensive. Funeral costs, auto repairs and lost income can place a heavy financial burden on a family. An attorney may be able to help a family explore their options with regard to financial compensation. Using police reports and accident reconstruction information, an attorney may be able to prove that a driver was being negligent at the time of an auto accident. If so, then that individual may be liable for the financial hardships brought upon a family that resulted from the accident.
