Pennsylvania cyclist killed in hit-and-run accident

A Narvon woman died after being hit in an alleged hit-and-run accident on a rural road in Lancaster County. The accident occurred on Oct. 31 around 9 a.m. in Caernarvon Township just a few miles south of Berks County.

According to authorities, a person passing by happened upon the 56-year-old woman and tried to render aid, but she eventually died at the scene. Officers have no description of the vehicle beyond suspicions that it is a commercial vehicle with dirt on its front bumper and undercarriage.

There were no reported witnesses to the auto accident, but damage to the victim's bicycle and evidence at the scene may confirm that it was in fact a large vehicle that struck the victim. Authorities are still trying to identify the vehicle and the driver.

Although the person believed to be responsible for this incident has yet to be located, a similar situation might hold such an individual both criminally and civilly accountable. A civil attorney may be able to review evidence, applicable surveillance videos from any nearby businesses and use other investigative methods in order to assign liability in a wrongful death lawsuit.

If a wrongful death lawsuit is successful, the spouse or dependents of the deceased may be awarded compensation for their pain and suffering that resulted from the fatal accident. If the accused driver was operating a commercial vehicle owned by their employer, the company might also be named as a plaintiff in a civil action suit for wrongful death.
