Antrim Township collision kills 1, injures 3

A Greencastle man was killed in a Dec. 3 accident that involved three vehicles on U.S. 11, according to authorities. The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m., also sent three people to a hospital with injuries.

According to authorities, a 47-year-old man in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban was apparently decelerating on the highway due to a left-turning vehicle when a Volkswagen Jetta with a 20-year-old male driver attempted to swerve around the Suburban without complete success, striking the tail end of the SUV. Subsequently, the Jetta careened into oncoming traffic and struck a northbound Buick Century, the vehicle driven by the Greencastle man, 76.

It was a head-on collision, reportedly. The 20-year-old man and three occupants of the Buick, including the 76-year-old man, received emergency transport to the hospital. Officials there later pronounced the 76-year-old man dead. The driver of the Jetta and the two Buick passengers received treatment for their accident-related injuries.

A traffic accident like this one may possibly give rise to civil action. While crashes that cause injuries sometimes lead to personal injury lawsuits, fatal accidents may elicit a wrongful death claim filed by the family of the deceased victim. These suits are most viable when a preponderance of the evidence indicates that the wreck would have been avoided but for the negligence of an involved party.

By filing a wrongful death lawsuit, families who lost a loved one to a senseless auto accident may have the opportunity to seek compensation for both economic and noneconomic losses that they suffered as a consequence of the fatal wreck. An attorney with experience in similar cases may provide such families guidance and representation.
