Hazards presented by distracted drivers

Distracted driving is no small matter for those Pennsylvania drivers who have been injured in a car accident that was caused by a distracted driver. In a study by the CDC, the risks of distracted driving became clear in statistics indicating that 3,328 people died and over 421,000 people were injured as a result of a distracted driver in 2012.

The CDC study looked over the U.S. and Europe car accident statistics from 2011 and found that there were three primary causes of distraction for these drivers. These included taking one's hands off of the wheel, or manual distraction, removing the eyes from the road, or visual distraction, and the mind wandering while driving, known as cognitive distraction.

Additionally, while there are many types of distractions for drivers that can range from dealing with children or getting lost, the CDC study focused on how many drivers became distracted from using their digital technology. Sixty-nine percent of American drivers stated that they had been distracted by cellphone calls, and 31 percent of U.S. drivers stated that they used either texting or email while driving in the month prior to the survey.

After a car accident, it can be difficult to prove that the other driver was at fault due to distraction. In order for a personal injury case to prove viable, a plaintiff must be able to establish negligence on part of the defendant. An attorney might be able to gather compelling evidence and review accident reports and any witness testimonies in order to get a better grasp on a unique situation.
