NTSB says collision avoidance technology should be in all cars

Pennsylvania drivers may appreciate hearing that the National Transportation Safety Board wants collision avoidance systems to become standard features on all commercial and passenger vehicle models. Last year, only four passenger vehicle models were manufactured with complete forward collision avoidance systems included as a standard feature. The federal agency says that all new passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles should have this safety system in place.

In its 60-page report, the NTSB detailed how collision avoidance systems could prevent rear-end crashes and lessen the severity of over 80 percent of them. Some of the systems that the NTSB is recommending include warning systems that alert drivers when they have left their lane or are about to crash, a stability control system and an assisted braking system.

The NTSB says that rear-end car accidents kill approximately 1,700 people and injure 500,000 people each year. Over the past 20 years, the agency has been promoting the wide adoption of forward collision avoidance systems in vehicles with little success. In a news release, the NTSB said that a lack of incentives and public awareness about collision avoidance systems was to blame for the slow progress. It says that collision warning systems should be added to vehicles first followed by autonomous emergency braking systems.

Those who have been injured after a driver rear-ended the vehicle that they were in may want to discuss the filing of a car accident injury lawsuit against the driver that would seek compensation for the damages that have been sustained. In many cases, it is not difficult to establish that the driver's negligence was the cause of the collision.
