Domestic abuse and the Track Palin case

Pennsylvanians have likely heard of Track Palin, the son of John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election. Track Palin was arrested in January on charges of domestic violence and other misdemeanors, as reported by police in Wasilla, Alaska. The police investigation determined that Palin had assaulted his girlfriend, interfered with her ability to report the act of domestic violence and was in possession of a firearm while he was intoxicated.

Palin's girlfriend reported that she was punched in the face during the incident. She reportedly had bruising and swelling of her left eye and mentioned pain in her right knee after allegedly being kicked. Palin faces three counts for misdemeanor assault, interfering with a domestic violence report and misconduct with a weapon. Both parties involved called 911 on the night of the incident, and one police officer reported that he found Palin speaking on the phone outside when he arrived at the scene.

According to the responding officer, Palin had an injury to his right eye and smelled of alcohol. He was allegedly hostile, which resulted in the officer handcuffing him. Other responding officers found his girlfriend crying underneath a bed in the home. According to the girlfriend, she hid inside the home because she was afraid that Palin would shoot himself after holding a rifle near his face.

Domestic abuse cases are often highly complicated. An attorney who has experience with these types of family law matters may provide assistance to a victim by filing for a permanent protective order, which is intended to deter further contact or threats.
