When a divorce goes public

Many Pennsylvania couples may be interested to learn that the divorce rates in the United States are on the rise, especially among older couples. In many cases, people who have been together longer have more assets that will need to be taken care of. If the case goes public, such as Johnny Depp's divorce, the toll on the couple's privacy can be heavy.

Because many documents are able to be accessed by the public when the divorce occurs, light may be shed on the amount of taxes a person pays or does not pay. If a spouse decides to sell or auction off certain assets, this could potentially be seen by the public as an attempt to reduce the value of a marital estate, especially if the items are being sold at a price that is lower than market value. If the marital estate is reduced, this means that the other spouse may receive less.

If the former couple does not have a lot of assets or if couples can simply not afford to live separately, getting a divorce may not be the right option. Some couples may want to separate but stay married in order to keep both individuals covered under the family health insurance policy.

When a couple has a high net worth generated by business assets and real estate holdings, the process of property division can be contentious as well as complex. Many family law attorneys will suggest to their clients that they attempt to resolve this issue through negotiations or mediation rather than leaving the division in the hands of a judge.
