Surveys show that many drivers are vulnerable to distractions

Pokemon Go is just the latest smartphone app to capture the attention of distracted drivers in Pennsylvania and across the U.S. Since the augmented reality game was released, there have been multiple car accidents involving drivers who were playing the game while behind the wheel. In addition to Pokemon Go, drivers are also being distracted by social media sites, Google Maps, YouTube and texting.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that distracted drivers kill at least eight and injure at least 1,000 people a day. However, distracted driving may be an underreported problem since a lot of drivers do not fess up to it. Surveys show that most people have used their cell phones in some capacity while driving.

The National Safety Council sponsored a survey of 2,400 drivers across all age groups and found that 74 percent of the respondents use Facebook while they drive. The survey also found that 37 percent of drivers use Twitter, 35 percent use YouTube and 33 percent use Instagram. In another distracted driving study, 70 percent of teen drivers said that they use smartphone apps while they drive. However, just 6 percent of the teens that were surveyed thought using social media while driving was the most dangerous distracted driving behavior.

When a person is injured by a distracted driver, the injured party may choose to file a civil complaint. An attorney may be able to help the injured party gather evidence to prove that the at-fault party was negligent. Some of the evidence that may be used in a car accident injury complaint may include cell phone records and witness testimony.
