Pennsylvania accident leaves 2 dead

Police in Pennsylvania believe that an 18-year-old man ran through two red lights before his Hyundai sedan was struck by an SUV in Philadelphia's Feltonville neighborhood on Oct. 14. The crash left two of his passengers, a 16-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man, dead. Reports indicate that the man was rushing to a nearby hospital to visit his father at the time of the accident.

The accident took place at the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Front Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. Witnesses told responding police officers that the man's car had ignored red lights at Rising Sun Avenue and Front Street before being struck on the driver's side by a Ford SUV. The force of the collision pushed the Hyundai into a light pole.

Bystanders pulled the driver of the Hyundai from his badly damaged car, but they were unable to free the man's two young passengers. Emergency response personnel pronounced the 16-year-old girl dead after arriving at the scene. The 19-year-old man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. The two drivers involved suffered minor injuries. Initial reports did not indicate whether or not excessive speed or alcohol consumption may have played a role.

Drivers are expected to follow traffic laws at all times, and accidents that cause death or catastrophic injuries can occur when motorists place their own personal interests ahead of the safety of other road users. This kind of behavior sometimes results in lengthy prison sentences for reckless drivers, and even those who escape criminal sanctions may be left badly injured and unable to work. When negligent motorists are incarcerated or lack the financial means to pay damages, personal injury attorneys pursuing compensation for car accident victims may initiate litigation against their auto insurance providers.
