Scarlett Johannson files for divorce, custody dispute looming

Pennsylvania movie fans may be interested to learn that, on March 7, actress Scarlett Johansson filed for divorce from her French husbad. The two announced that they had separated in January after less than two years of marriage. They have a 2-year-old daughter together.

Johansson and her estranged husband were reportedly negotiating a settlement when she filed. The following day, she issued a public statement, during which she asked for privacy and said that she would not be making any comments. The former husband issued his own statement and asked Johansson to consider going back to the negotiation table.

Experts stated that, by filing the divorce action, it is more likely that the state of New York will have jurisdiction over the custody case. The estranged husband could still potentially file in his native France, though he has not done so. Regardless, it can be difficult for the court to determine where celebrities actually live, as many own multiple homes and have to live in different places depending on when and where they are working. Although Johansson requested joint custody, she asked that the child live primarily with her.

Child custody disputes can be difficult for both the parents and the child. If a parent has primary custody of the children, a family law attorney for the noncustodial parent may negotiate a visitation schedule that allows the parent to be involved in the child's life. If the noncustodial parent travels constantly for work, the attorney may negotiate certain times when the parent can have digital access to the child. This way, the parent can still maintain constant contact with the child.
