Tips for persuading a person to not drive drunk

Some people in Pennsylvania may wonder how they can prevent individuals from driving after they have been drinking alcohol. When trying to dissuade someone from driving drunk, it is important to remain nonconfrontational. It might be necessary to speak slowly and explain things more carefully than would be needed with a sober person.

Another strategy is to express concern about the intoxicated individual's safety. He or she can then be offered alternatives such as staying over for the night or alternate transportation including a taxi, public transportation or a sober driver.

When trying to prevent a drunk person from getting behind the wheel, it can be helpful to enlist help. It may be more difficult for someone who is impaired to ignore several people rather than only one. If possible, the person's keys should be taken. If he or she insists on driving and it is not possible to take the keys, then the police should be called. Involving law enforcement and potentially having someone get arrested is better than risking injury or death.

A drunk driver could seriously injure another person, who will probably expect compensation from insurance for the cost of his or her injuries and any vehicle damage. Victims of drunk drivers may also lose income if they are unable to work, so they may want to speak with attorneys that may negotiate with the insurance companies or file lawsuits against the drivers. If the drunk driver faced criminal charges for driving under the influence and the charges were dropped or reduced or he or she was found not guilty, a victim still may file a civil case. In a criminal case, the defendant may have agreed to a plea bargain. There is also a higher standard of proof than in a civil case.
