How the NHTSA is warning against drunk driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has kicked off its annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in the effort to keep motorists from driving drunk during the holiday season and beyond. The campaign consists of TV commercials, which are being aired in Pennsylvania and all over the U.S., and a 360-degree virtual reality web program that allows users to explore the scene of a drunk driving crash.

Drunk driving is a serious problem, leading to 781 traffic fatalities in December 2016. In the past five years, an average of 300 alcohol-related traffic fatalities have been reported between Christmas and New Year's Day. Moreover, a study from the NHTSA has shown that one-third of all drivers arrested for DUI are repeat offenders.

The purpose of the campaign is simple: to get drivers to stay safe on the road, to raise awareness of the effects of alcohol on driving abilities, and to encourage drunk driving prevention. Individuals are called on to keep friends and loved ones from getting behind the wheel if they have had one too many.

The NHTSA has also developed the SaferRide app, which allows anyone impaired by alcohol to call up the nearest taxi service with the tap of a button. The agency is also working with law enforcement partners to help protect the public from the hazards that intoxicate drivers represent.

When car accidents occur through the recklessness of a drunk driver, occupants of other vehicle often sustain serious injuries that require lengthy and expensive medical care and treatment. Such victims might want to have legal assistance when seeking compensation for these and other losses.
