What steps will you take after a car crash?

Even though you have no intention of being part of a car crash, you must be prepared in the event that this happens.

The steps that you take after a car crash are critical to your short-term and long-term well-being. While it's hard to know what to do when you are put in such a difficult spot, here are five steps you absolutely need to take:

  • Immediately check yourself and your passengers for injuries
  • Move your vehicle to safety, as long as it's in condition to do so
  • Call 911, as this will speed up the process of police and an ambulance arriving at the scene
  • Exchange information with other parties, such as insurance policy details, license plate number and contact numbers
  • Notify your insurance company, but don't feel compelled to share too much information

Along with the above, it's important to remember that your health is more important than anything else. So, if you're dealing with an injury and unable to exchange information with the other driver, don't concern yourself with this. You need to do what's best for you, and then deal with everything else as time allows in the future.

Once you receive treatment, you'll find yourself faced with a variety of questions and decisions. For instance, you'll need to work closely with your insurance company to get a better idea of how to file a claim and the type of compensation you can receive. Depending on the cause of the accident, you may also want to learn more about your legal rights.
