Fourth of July accidents

Holidays entail celebrations and festivities, but they also cause an increase in the number of accidents, some of which may be fatal. Pennsylvania residents may be surprised to learn that the Fourth of July has such a negative effect on public health that the holiday is considered to be the deadliest in the U.S.A.

There are several reasons that make the Fourth of July a dangerous weekend, the first of which is the stark increase in the number of accidents caused by inebriated drivers traversing long stretches of road. Hundreds of these accidents are fatal, leading some insurance companies to estimate that 40 percent of all fatalities on highways happen during this holiday.

Another factor that is responsible for many crippling injuries during Independence Day is the use of fireworks. Seeing as they are incendiary, fireworks can lead to lost fingers and burnt hands if handled poorly. It is not unusual for fireworks to injure other parts besides the hands and fingers, including the eyes, ears and face.

Given that this Fourth of July is estimated to cause more than 37.5 million Americans drive at least 50 miles from their homes in order to celebrate the holiday, it should come as no surprise to learn that the concurrent number of accidents is expected to be high. Anyone planning to enjoy the holiday would do well to be cautious on the road, especially at night when people are most prone to have had too much to drink. In the event that someone gets involved in an unfortunate car accident caused by another motorist, victims may wish to reach out to an experienced lawyer who may be able to help them receive compensation for damages.
